Catherine's First Birthday (in photos + a slideshow)

Our baby Catherine is not so much a baby anymore... I can't believe she is one and it's beyond belief how fast these last 12 months have passed by.

Her party last weekend was a low key one... just a few close friends and Bao and Ty made the trip up from Adelaide especially to celebrate with us... Catherine wore a little white ao dai (a Vietnamese traditional dress) at her party... it's the very same one that my mum sewed by hand which I wore at my first birthday party, and which Elizabeth also wore at her first birthday party. I love that my Mum was still able to be a part of our day in this small way... It makes me smile and get all sentimental to think we have all been able to share the same little outfit on our milestone birthday.

One year olds don't do much at parties... We played pass the parcel... and the other kids were content to play in the yard while Catherine pretty much spent 90% of the party sitting in her high chair watching on while eating spring rolls which are her favourite food at the moment. She spotted them when they were freshly cooked and refused to have a morning nap until she'd eaten one... and then she had 4 at the party... and 3 for dinner... 8 in total all day! That's a lot of spring rolls for a little child! She unwrapped some presents (with the help of Elizabeth, who loved helping her!) and enjoyed shaking and playing with her abundance of new clothes that she received and also with her toys (a postbox that Elizabeth picked out, 2 xylophones (one from Chu Phong and one from us), a pelican thing, and a tray of wooden blocks, a cogwheel snail and some books) She also loves the new spotted bowl set that her godmother Vicky got her... (well actually, I'm sure that's more me... but it's so pretty!) and loves that her godfather Tuyen all the way over in Ireland sent her a birthday card with a morsecode baby-talk message in it! So lucky, so loved and so blessed. Catherine must have known it was a special day on her birthday, because she hardly slept all day and was in a remarkably happy mood.

Just a quick condensed summary of party in a few photos -

I also did a pre-party cake smash shoot with a giant cupcake, the day before her party... I've seen a lot of cake smash shoots and it always looks like it's frantic and crazy as the child gets into the cake. But Catherine (much like her sister), is a cautious child. She was quite tentative and sat there looking at the cake for ages... slowly suss-ing it out... but once she figured out it tasted yum and that there was cake in there, she got into it and really enjoyed it. She was really quite drawn to the giant cherry on top (which was just a ball of fondant coloured with a heap of red food colouring)...

And just a few little things about what our 1 year old is like at the moment -

She can stand unassisted for several seconds, but when she realises she's standing, she freaks out and grabs onto me or the couch.

She hates being spoon food and prefers to try to feed herself. Favourite food is meat, meat and meat. Followed by jatz biscuits and broccoli. Dislikes most fruit.

She is a food beggar... as soon as she sees anybody eating (me, Phan, Elizabeth), she rushes over and makes a lot of noise until you give her some food.

She loves her big sister lots... and loves following her around.

Her favourite song is "Old McDonald Had A Farm"... which she laughs and claps to... I have to sing this song to her while changing her nappy to stop her from trying to crawl off the change table.

She likes to clap her hands and dance... she has this little boppy wiggle that is hilarious... I need to catch it on video.

She has a lot of personality for a little person and her cheeky grin could soften a heart of stone.

I'll finish this post with Catherine's first year in photos... slideshow making is not my forte, but this has been made with love and makes me so nostalgic as I look back and see how much she has grown in these last 12 months.

We love you, our beautiful Catherine... We have been changed and so blessed with your presence in our lives... xoxo

The Wookiee

Ty just reminded me of the photos I took of him dressed up as Chewbacca when he was out trooping for the Relay for Life fundraiser for The Cancer Council (a worthy cause!) at Tea Tree Plaza while we were back visiting Adelaide. The photos were on my G10, and I had forgotten to download the photos off that camera... I'm so sorry Ty! So to make up for it, this post is dedicated to you Ty and the big hairy Wookiee...

The Tweed Coat Shoot

If you have sound, turn it on, 'cos I've sync-ed this slideshow to music... :)

I've wanted to do a slideshow put to music for months, but it has taken me *ages* to get the jumpcut site to like me enough to do it... (Don't ask, I've had problems getting it to link to my yahoo account it kept bouncing me and refusing me... was a real PITA... I don't know why Yahoo hates me so much... it's the second time I've had so much trouble with passwords and usernames and stuff...) Anyway.... here's my first groovy slideshow ever... not bad for a first attempt...

This was the photoshoot we did on Tuesday (when i was in a bad mood from lack of sleep)... I was really beginning to get pressed to do a photoshoot with Beth wearing this outfit because she has been going through a bit of growth spurt and the coat is almost getting too small for her (it's getting short in the sleeves)... so I really wanted to get some photos of her in this outfit, because it is one of my all time favourites (I fell in love with this tweed coat the moment I saw it... it was ridiculous how much I ummed and ahhed about buying it!) The hilarious thing was after the shoot, we dropped into Coles to buy a couple of things and on the way back to the car while we were waiting for the lift, there was a couple with a baby girl who was probably about 6 months with a cute headband. I commented on how adorable her girl was with that headband and the mum said to me - "That's funny, I was just saying to my husband how I love that dress your daughter is wearing. I wanted to buy it for my girl but I couldn't find it in her size." And then we proceeded to have a conversation about how cute the matching coat was (and her husband laughed at us and said "oh, you women and your clothes")... It was pretty funny! So, I now feel a bit justified in my crazy obsession with this outfit... :)

The Art of Making Scones

These photos were taken a couple of weeks ago (7th of May) when Beth and I were making scones one afternoon... (yes she is in daggy home clothes and she has bed hair, but she is naturally adorable isn't she?)

The Bunny Outtakes...

Just so you can get a feel for how difficult it really is to photography a 16 month old child, here are some of the "better" outtakes of the bunny shoot -

Today was a low key day... didn't do too much... we did boring household chores in the morning and then went to the park for a bit of energy-burning... Then came home and Beth had some lunch before having a long 2.5 hour nap. When she woke up, gave her a bit more to eat and we played a bit and then we went to Good Friday mass at 3pm... Beth lasted just over an hour (thanks to some blueberries and mini rice cakes) before she started getting antsy, so we managed to stay for most of the mass, but did have to leave before we got a chance to venerate the cross (as did several other people with small children). Then home, and we didn't do much other than have dinner and Beth was pretty tired, so went to bed a bit early.

It has been somewhat of a reflective day for me today... I have missed having family around... missed going to Stations of the Cross and Good Friday mass together... Just a very contemplative day generally...

The Easter Bunny Shoot

This is one very curious bunny!

An Artist At Work...

As much as I love improving my photography skills and taking artistic and "beautiful" photos of Beth all dressed up and perfect, I also just love being a mummy and taking normal "happy snaps" of Beth playing... Nothing fancy, artistic or beautiful about these photos... but they just capture everyday moments, which I love... so I sacrifice a bit of artistic flair to capture these moments... It's all too hard and particularly challenging, when I'm trying to stop this particular little artist from eating paint... putting paint on the ground, swiping the clean laundry on the line ... and all this done with (large) camera in hand whilst trying to avoid her getting paint on me and the camera!

Can I mention, that I did not think through the finger painting part of this activity thoroughly enough... I was totally unprepared for the sheer mess she made... that combined with a soiled nappy... getting her upstairs into the bath without getting paint on the carpet was quite an ordeal... It was rather cool having the bath water turn blue though...

Let me tell you a story about a fairy...

Tuesday, March 11

Okay... so I lied...

These are really the last set of photos from the park shoot last week... :p
I wasn't going to show these photos, 'cos there's nothing really spectacular about any of them... but I figure, well I managed to nail the focus on these shots, I may as well show them... plus Bao left a comment on one of my previous entries saying how much she enjoyed looking at the photos... so that's all the encouragement I need... :)

I actually like the first photo of her where she is pointing at the ground... I have no idea what she was actually pointing at... I think she may have actually been poking and enjoying the weird spongy surface (that bit of the ground is spongy to cushion the impact of the kids on the swings). Oh and in case you're wondering what she's doing in the photos in the latter part of the slideshow when she's standing at that grey plastic thing... she's actually picking out bits of dirt and bark out of the little grooves in the grey plastic and either
(a) trying to eat it
(b) generously trying to give it to me as a present
(c) just picking it up and playing with it... sometimes dropping it... sometimes flinging it ... it is so weird what she plays with.

Nothing too exciting going on here today ... we had a rental inspection today that went fine... Beth and I popped out to Coles in the morning and then she dozed off in the car on the way home (it was only 10:15am)... so I woke her up by putting sunscreen on her and then we went out to the park... Home for lunch followed by nap, and then when she woke up we met up with Sharon and Em at Spotlight and then went back to their place for a drink and the girls played a bit.

Beth was a bit less clingy today... but still wanted me to pick her up a lot... and really enjoys sitting in my lap... she is a funny bunny...

Okay... last set of photos from that park shoot...

I promise these will be last set of photos from that park shoot I did last week...

Do you think she likes her wading pool?

Noodle Photos Close Up

Just thought I'd show all the noodles close up because you can't see her facial expression that well in the scrapbook layout I did...

Saturday Morning At The Park

Monday, February 25

Some silliness in new pajamas...

I bought Beth some new pajamas last week from Target... they are sooo cute... they have an oriental cherry blossom with a nightingale print on them... Btw - don't mind the massive wet patch on the front of her top... that was a bit of spillage from the drink she was slurping through a straw... what can I say? She's a messy kid!

Morning At The Park

Yesterday morning we went to the Newmarket pool... We got there at 8:15am and the place was full of kids... obviously everybody had the same idea of going to the pool early while it wasn't too hot! Beth loved playing there in the water and with all the little funny mushroom fountains and showers ... it is the best kids pool... and it's under shade cloth too... We only stayed half an hour 'cos Beth got cold... then came home and had some breakfast and showers and then headed out again in a bid to keep Beth awake until 11:30am... we went and got a mattress for the spare room from Sleepy's and then we went to Scootopia so Phan could satisy his curiousity and check out a scooter (but is *not* buying one... thank goodness!), then back home again. We spent the rest of the day at home in airconditioning because it was so hot (36 degrees!) and it was not the kind of heat you feel like walking around in!

This morning, we went to the park at 9am... Beth had a ball... was more interested in walking by herself than walking with the car. Here are some snaps... same park, same baby girl as last time... but wearing different dress (Sprouts dress courtesy of Chi, Mitch and Thomas present from Beth's birthday) and we had Daddy for company...

Beth kept wanting to walk in the speckled shade, so some of these photos have weird lighting in them... nothing too spectacular in a photography technical sense... but we had fun.

This afternoon we caught up with Davinder (who is in town for a family wedding) and David and fiancee Tanya (Phan went to high school with David)... They just came around for a casual lunch and we just hung out ... it was lovely. Nice to see some familiar faces!
